GILBERT'S MEDITERRANEAN CAFE
|
A few weeks ago we had a write-up on the grand opening of Gilbert's Mediterranean Cafe, corner of Tenth Street and Piedmont Avenue. It seems that a number of our readers have patronized the Cafe, some more than once, and they had nothing short of praiseful comments about the friendly atmosphere, the delicious dishes, and the reasonable prices.
Management has just announced that they will be initiating something special every Wednesday night after 10:00 PM, beginning with Wednesday, October 24, 2001. They will be offering a variety of live shows for those patrons who seek entertainement in a lounge and bar atmosphere. The first show will feature a belly-dancer, followed by a flamengo dancer next week, followed by Greek sailor dancers the following week.
Due to the success and the novelty of the entertainement, it is suggested that reservations be made on Wednesday evenings, both for dinner, as well as for the show. The number to call is (404) 872 - 8012.
We wish the brothers, Nisan and Gilbert, the best of success in their new undertakings.

MIDTOWNGAZETTE ENDORSES SHIRLEY FRANKLIN
For the record, there are five candidates running as mayoral candidates. Former City Chief Administrative Officer Shirley Franklin, City Council President Robb Pitts, former City Councilperson Gloria Bromell-Tinubu, G.B.Osborne and Trudy Jane Kitchin. In any elective campaign, there are two cardinal weapons a candidate needs to have, in order to have a chance of winning the election. They are money and organization. Unfortunately, the last three candidates lack both weapons. As a result, their chances of winning this election have diminished considerably.
Shirley Franklin has managed to mount an effective campaign with frequent TV commercials. She has outpaced Robb Pitts in money raised, organization, and endorsements. She is our candidate, although we predict a run-off between Shirley Franklin and Robb Pitts, since neither candidate will be able to muster over 50% of the vote on November 6th.
Shirley Franklin has managed to earn key endorsements such as the Policemen and Firemen, former mayors Andrew Young and Maynard Jackson and a preferential endorsement from the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. One should not expect revolutionary changes from Shirley Franklin when she is elected, however, bringing in dignity to the Office of the Mayor and holding people accountable for their respective performances, is a significant improvement. She has also earned a great number of Atlantans' respect by releasing her income tax returns for the past four years; making the names of all of her contributors available; declaring that she will not accept outside gifts, nor guest speaker fees, are some of the attributes which indicate her policy in honesty, integrity and aspiring to higher ethical standards.
Robb Pitts is a dedicated and seasoned politician having served in the City Council for 20 years. He is an honest and intelligent person who has the backing of some influencial business people in Atlanta. However, he has not been able to mount an envigorating campaign to catch the voters attention and enthusiasm. There is very little difference between Shirley Franklin and Robb Pitts on the issues at stake. They both speak of integrity and higher ethical standards in city government; they both speak of improving delivery of services by city government; they both speak of avoiding corruption in contract bidding; and they both acknowledge that they will be inheriting problems such as a crumbling sewer system, a budget shortfall, a \$360 million dollar dirt contract scandal, and many more. It is this parity that makes us predict a run-off between the two candidates.
We encourage all of our readers to come out on November 6th and cast their vote for the candidate of their preference.
